It's All About the Backstory...

I think of myself as a storyteller. Everything I make comes from somewhere. In the real world, and in the story world. The creator of the 'Lab' in Mars Argo's Using You would have been an inspired dude. But inspired by what?

I went deep into the imagined mind of the maker. I major influence was the mid 60's furniture in the original Star Trek series. The concept was the inventor of these strange and vague machines had been at it since the 60's, adding and updating lazily over a lifetime's pursuit.

I gave all the equipment specific names, and imagined their purpose. I dreamed up a story about how the creator suffered a heartbreak after pouring all of his money into his creation, only to be overlooked by his peers. I put on a funky playlist and started piecing together the odd machines populating the room around the musicians.
