The Process...

Ice Scream, Yous Cream...

The ice cream factory set in Rhett & Link's I'm On Vacation was inspired by a nasty walk-in cooler I once had to clean at a summer job. Somehow, adding ice to anything makes it depressing. Trust me, I grew up in the midwest.

You can see the original concept drawing was mirrored. The conveyor belt only ran one direction, so we flipped the room to accommodate the non-ambi-turner conveyor belt.

The icicles were created using a combination of techniques. Some of them are aluminum foil painted with a mix of white glue, glitter, and epsom salt. Some of the fine ice details were made melting candles on the set, letting them run down into the cracks and small spaces. The front of the conveyor belt was brushed on using a mixture of epsom salt and white paint.
